DCS World

Postby Rongor » Thu Oct 30, 2014 7:12 pm

I hereby declare myself interested in engaging some of you guys in DCS World MP.
I strongly recommend everybody interested in flight simulations to put an eye on DCS World. In my opinion, nothing comes that close to accurate hardcore simulation of functional cockpits, aviation and weaponry.
DCS World is an ongoing project, much development can be expected for the future. Falcon BMS may still lead in the race for simulation quality when it comes to F-16 and also dynamic campaigns and radio comms. Besides of these mentioned points, DCS World is not only the most ambitious simulation on the market but also the obvious prevailing (combat) aviation simulation for the next years.

For questions regarding DCS World and also for some fun MP time, please show up in this thread.

I will try to provide help and advices about what DCS World is and how to take at least some of the obstacles to take when getting into this study sim.
I am nowhere near pro status and also not too sufficient in most modules, but I aim to have them all.

In MP I would suggest to mess around together in some sandbox starting scenarios, where everybody is allowed to make first steps while enjoying company.
Expect me to soar around in a Huey, a Mi-8 or the Ka-50 frequently, just to show off. Rest of the time I will do A-10C or my recently acquired F-86...

For those who don't know DCS World yet or plan to get some additional modules, there opens up an opportunity to benefit from the Steam Halloween Sales.
Visit the DCS World section here: There are also some introductional videos linked, that you should check if you are interested in DCS World and want to find out more.

The developer's website is
Their forum is a good place to meet all kind of aviation enthusiasts. You will find some members of the Baloogan community there (also me of course)

I've got A-10C, FC3, BS2 (though I have no clue how to fly a helo... I can't even hover with the BS), and I think I want to get F-86

I really want to learn the A-10C 100%. I love air to ground in BMS and the warhog is just an awesome aircraft.

I myself own the A-10C, UH-1H, and P-51D modules on it.

I can fly the stuff, but I can never remember the targeting/boot up procedures for the A-10C. For the UH-1H and P-51D, I can never remember start-up procedures.

I love it in principle, but it looks too complicated for me.

Not all modules are of equal complexity.
If you prefer it more shallow, you can enjoy the F-15, A-10A or Su-27 modules, these don't feature clickable cockpits. You can get them as single modules or contained in the FC3 package.
Also F-86 and the Huey are far from the A-10C complexity. I can confirm you can learn how to use all their implemented functions in about 2 to 4 hours, probably less. This doesn't include becoming very skilled of course.

Now would be the time to buy. Prices on steam look great.

Anybody had any experience with the land module? Can you set up battles anywhere or just in Georgia?

Thanks!

The land module "Combined Arms" offers generally some nice features.
It was released to give the option of having JTAC , even in MP. So one player could assume that JTAC role and lase the other player's GBU into the target. Setting up battles using implemented ground units was possible even before CA. The remarkable difference now is that you can hop into many of these units and enjoy the DCS landscape from the ground perspective.
Ground vehicles are of course of very shallow simulation quality, so it is more a fun feature than a DCS level implementation. So you really shouldn't expect too much from it, I admit not using it very often as the simulation focus is still up in the air. You can have some fun when unleashing some tanks on one another or even enjoying control yourself in an ongoing ground battle. In MP you can have designated JTAC or ground commanding players that can keep the flying players busy. Other than that, there is not really much to use yet.
There are hints that ED might increase functionality of CA over time, but ED in most cases needs lots of time to come up with something new.

Since CA is very cheap, you can't really be disappointed.

You can set up battles like you do with air assets, also some templating is possible. You use the mission editor for that, which incorporates some kind of mission generator. As the present DCS World features the eastern Black sea map only, you are limited to that area, yes.
This will change with the soon to arrive new graphics engine EDGE, that will enable new maps, due to a then spherical earth. Next maps to come after EDGE gets released are the Nevada training range including Las Vegas and included in a WW2 module package, Normandy will see the light of day. Afterwards, a map of the southern persian gulf theater was also announced recently.
